The Source and Certainty of Scripture
2 Peter 1:19-21 (KJB) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
There is no doubt about the origin of scripture. Neither is there any question about its intent and purpose. Scripture is a reliable source about both the past and the future. It is trustworthy and timeless and as God promises will be divinely preserved forever.
Scripture is The Word, and The Word is Jesus Christ. Scripture is the Word of God (John 1:1-3). It is the light shining in this world which is a dreadfully dark and spiritually dreary place. Though sometimes it seems as if this darkness will overcome God’s light, that is impossible for many verses of scripture, including these three, give us the eternal source and certainty of which they were revealed for our learning.
God’s Word in its entirety is true and sure. Whether it speaks of ancient times and people or points to a place and season in this world today or has predicted about tomorrow, we can be sure that it is an eternally reliable source always proven to be true.
