The Underpinning of Idolatry
Colossians 3:5-6 (KJB) Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.
These verses tell us about the roots of idolatry at work in this world. These world based things are often worshipped over and above cherishing God. Rather than allowing God’s peace rule and rein in their hearts, many people choose to serve and savor the stuff of this world and enable idolatry to simmer and stew in their hearts and minds. They sustain fondness for things of this world rather than be thankful for things of God.
Let’s look at the words God used in describing idolatry in these above verses. This is vital for us to comprehend for in worshipping things and in admiring people these things keep us from allowing God to stand in first place in our life:
Fornication – unlawful sex between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman.
Uncleanness – to be spiritually foul, not clean, filthy
Evil concupiscence – sexual lust, deep dark passion
Coveteousness – eager to have, a strong desire for something (apart from God’s will for us)
A child of God must place God’s will for his or her life first and foremost. If we allow anything, such as these things in this verse to replace God, then each of us must reassess the disobedient path we are following. Place your worship and adoration upon God, and He will make you shine with His glory in every good thing.
