They Lacked Spiritual Clarity
John 2:19-20 (KJB) Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
Jesus Christ was speaking to the Jewish audience about His body. He was the temple which would be destroyed. However, though these people followed Him and were familiar with His teaching, they did not understand what was about to take place. Especially confusing to them was His mention of raising it up in three days.
Their understanding hedged on what they could see and experience in this world. The Jewish people thought Jesus was referring to an actual temple building. How could such a structure be raised in three days they must have wondered, knowing that kind of physical work for a man takes much longer.
We are so fortunate to be alive in this world after the great spiritual events on Calvary. We can more easily understand that His temple was speaking of His physical death upon the Cross and that He would arise from the grave three days later.
Our perspective of God takes on a whole different meaning as we focus on God and His Son Jesus Christ through the lens of God’s finished work of Calvary. These ancient Jewish people were fortunate to dwell with Jesus in person but were unable to understand anything about spiritual riches and an eternal future without a view of Calvary.
