Thou Sustains

Thou Sustains

Nehemiah 9:21 (KJV) Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.

Many of you are likely familiar with this biblical scripture looking back to the care and interest of God concerning the Israelites during their forty-year journey to the Promised Land.  However, maybe you, like them, have not understood and applied God’s providence to your life.  God is the “Energizer Bunny” of biblical proportions, giving, and giving, and giving of His goodness and mercy to whosoever will place trust in Him!

It is true. God provided everything that the Israelites needed for their journey, and I mean everything.  Why then did the Israelites cry and whine to Moses and God?  Because they did not always receive what they wanted and when they wanted it.  They wanted the food they so enjoyed in Egypt, like leeks, melons, and such.  Instead, they received manna from God.  God understood just what they wanted, and he was too good to give them what they desired.  You see, even today, when we wish and pray for things of this world, but God gives us what we need, in the moment, and for all eternity.  Sometimes, like the Israelites, we do not recognize how good God is to us in every moment of life.

We serve the same God today who promises to give each of us just what we need and when we need it.  So often, we are our own worst enemy when it comes to perceived requirements.  We can go to the store and pick up most often whatever we think we need, often leaving little or no room for God to will and work in our lives.  However, often we fail to comprehend differences between our desires and needs, but God always knows exactly what we need and when we need it!

You can bet, God knows the difference, then and now.  While the Israelites whined for garlic and onions, and God provided manna. And, it was just what they needed for their journey.  You, too, can trust God’s providence in your trek through this wicked world!
