Thus Saith The Lord
Exodus 4:21-23 (KJB) And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. 22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: 23 And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn.
These three verses are an Old Testament powerhouse for showcasing the power of God against the hardening of Pharoah’s heart and that through supernatural miracles, God is glorified through the release of His people.
Yes, it is true throughout time that God can and does use any situation to bring about His presence and power amid situations of life. These verses present a time in ancient history that God used His divine ability to harden the heart of a political leader to bring about His will in the matter.
God revealed to Moses His plans and brought them to pass just as He spoke, giving significant meaning to the phrase “Thus saith the LORD…” By the way, this instance in verse twenty-three is the first mention in the Bible of “Thus saith the LORD. Those who regularly study the Bible have likely heard about the rule of first mention and the importance attached to it.
Another critical thing to point out here in this last verse is that God points to Israel as his son and his firstborn. These statements give both context and clarity about His chosen people.
God’s words are significant, then and today. Here in these Old Testament verses, He spoke, and thus, it was done. We would all do well to pay attention to all the things that God has spoken in the past, and especially the many times throughout history His words have come to pass, and finally, in applying relevant promises in our lives today.
