True Wisdom Does Not Require A Degree
James 3:15-17 (KJB) This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
In the verses just before these above, James was referring to the characteristics of earthly wisdom. He continues by describing the character of this kind of knowledge.
Though James did not spell it out in such pointed terms, the truth is that true wisdom does not require a degree.
Sadly, this kind of higher education rhetoric is what many choose to believe is necessary for acquiring essential knowledge. They think it can be found in academic study, hard work, and learning skills applicable in a life-long career while these things can be important while living in this world. They mean nothing when compared to the eternal wisdom given freely of God. Book knowledge is one thing, but the spiritual understanding and wisdom given of God is something entirely different.
The truth is a person can have a doctorate, a medical degree, or other extensive academic or Scientific training and still be ignorant concerning what matters in this life and beyond. In other words, a person can set himself up to be successful in this world but to fail miserably eternally speaking.
The spiritual bottom line: While both areas of learning are beneficial, God’s Word can give a person all that he or she needs to know about this world and in eternal matters. God’s wisdom is comprehensive and complete and is far-reaching and more significant than attaining a college degree.
