Unable To Refute
Acts 6:8-10 (KJV) And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.
Stephen was under the influence and power of God. He spent his time testifying about Christ. His strong witness got him in trouble with other wicked hearted men who did not know God. These men set up false witnesses to testify against Stephen (Acts 6:11-14) in an attempt to dampen the interest in truths he spoke and to wage a war of persecution against him.
This all-out war against Stephen was because no man could refute his great faith in God and his testimony. At this time, even Saul, who would later become the Apostle Paul, was against his ministry, standing in opposition to God.
Though all these men, Libertines, Cyrenians, Alexandrians, Cilicia, and Asia, all stood head to head with Stephen and attempted to dispute his teaching, however, none of them successfully came up against the Spirit of God at work in his life and ministry. His testimony stood firm because the Spirit and power of God were involved.
