Unity Only Possible In Christ
Psalm 133:1-3 (KJV) A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
Nothing is sweeter than unity in Christ. This spiritual coupling is the ultimate of all relationships. The truth is that unless a person is united in fellowship with Christ, no other relationship will ever be right. It takes genuine unity with The Spirit and a heart right with God to rightly affect all other unions, including congregants in a church.
However, sadly, in some modern-day churches, congregations’ accord comes from something other than agreeing about God’s truth. People in pews often choose to agree with anything their pastor says, without considering if it aligns with His Word. They can agree about music, as an example, even when it is modern music that strays from that modeled by God in His hymn book – Psalms. Or they can agree about gathering for a meal after the day’s sermon.
However, on more often spiritually sticky issues, such as women in the pulpit, abortions, sodomy, the building of a new annex, or a ministry’s direction – God’s way is not always the way of professing, but struggling Christians will find agreement and unity in Christ. Sadly, often wayward choices come from leading with feelings and emotions rather than grounded in God’s truths and His divine direction.
In the end, sincere unity and agreement among families, congregations, friends, spouses, or whatever relationship is at stake must include unity in the Spirit of Christ for harmony to exist and work for the long term. Collective souls in agreement with Christ can rise above any disunity and disgruntle in this world to fulfill His will for their life.
