What About Eunuchs and Marriage

Matthew 19:10-12 (KJB) His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. 11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. 12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

These scripture verses from the book of Matthew present a conundrum, or challenge, for some people.  Why? Though these verses are relevant, they do not contain doctrine or a commandment of God, there is a lot of mystery, misinformation, and lingering questions concerning them, and in the larger picture when comprehending marriage, eunuchs, in understanding the expressed teaching of these verses.

Some pastors will take this scripture and form them to fit their lopsided views in support of unbiblical positions.  Others will shrug their heads, never comprehending the message God intends us to gather because they are not able to hear and apply His message.  Others will tie this message into “must do’s” and stiff regulations far removed from Jesus’s expressed intention.

The Pharisees here in the ancient context were facing a challenge about their teaching; their philosophy, which allowed divorce and ultimately was much broader than the restrictive application here that Jesus instructed.  Jesus both recognizes marriage and singleness.  While most people are destined for marriage and children, some are born to be single and live unto God rather than unto God and a spouse.  Others, such as eunuchs, are often prevented from marrying, and indeed, in consummating a marriage, some desire nothing than to be united in spiritual fellowship with God and give no thought to physical malfunction.

Jesus tells us that not all people can receive the messages found in these verses.  Sometimes, just as with the Pharisees, closely-held traditions block biblical teaching.  For others, they will be unable to hear and apply what is said concerning marriage, divorce, and eunuchs, for they are not spiritually enjoined with God and cannot listen to what God has to say.
