What Does Scripture Say?
Romans 4:3-5 (KJV) For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
The Apostle Paul here in this verse is first looking back to the Old Testament to Abraham’s salvation. Why, because the salvation process remains the same throughout the entire canon of scripture. Nothing about it will change from ancient times to this day and for as long as this earth remains.
Then the Apostle Paul gives us an illustration of a ledger used in recording debts and payments to reconcile sin debt with God’s grace. Suppose you can picture a log containing all your sin in one column and God’s payment for your sin in another column. The final amount due has a zero balance and is marked as “paid in full.”
A softened spiritual heart must apply God’s grace to their confessed sin through faith to wear God’s righteousness.
Abraham took God at His Word about salvation. There is nothing that any person can do to merit God’s salvation. Any promise of righteousness that relies upon works of humanity is not redemption offered by God. God wipes the ledger of sin clean through the finished work of Jesus Christ upon Calvary, and all humanity must do is place faith in the heart work of God.
