Wrestling of Wills
Genesis 32:24 (KJB) And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
Jacob wrestled with a man all night. This was not just any man but a physical manifestation of God.
God could have at any time taken Jacob down and ended this unflattering struggle but God chose to let Jacob continue to scuffle against Him for a stretch. Sometimes He allows you and me to wrestle for a time with Him about a troubling situation in our life until we come to the end our ourselves.
Hmm…. Sound familiar? I bet a similar “spiritual match up” has happened to you too.
A battle of the wills takes place when we desire to have our own way. Jacob wanted his own way. God will not negotiate or settle for less of Jacob or from us. Jacob even tried insisting that God bless him before he would raise up his “spiritual white flag” signaling the end of his struggle. Jacob forget he was not in control of the situation.
God is always the one who calls the shots.
God does not take direction from man, ouch…
God desires mankind humbly follow Him. Sadly, however, often we still try to persuade God to do things our way rather than simply submitting to His direction. If we take a step back and humbly follow His direction, He would gladly take care of the details of our lives. Sometimes God has to go to extreme measures to get our undivided attention upon Him.
Jacob subsided from wrestling when God touched the hollow of his leg. This was a necessary injury for getting Jacobs undivided attention. This physical injury stayed with Jacob as a pointed reminder of the magnitude of the supernatural power of God at work in his life.
