You Want Me To Do What?
1 Kings 20:35-38 (KJV) And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him. Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him. Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him. So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
Can’t you hear this first guy as he asks a nearby person to sock him square in the face? God directed you to do what this neighbor might add to this surprising circumstance. It seems an odd request, especially coming from God’s direction, and perhaps hard to understand. However, each of us desires to be obedient to God, and this requires stepping out and following God, despite the peculiarity of His requests and leading.
Sometimes as a child of God, we may face an unbelievable state of affairs. Have you ever heard any such thing as asking another to give you a hard right swing to the face? But, if you read on, you will find that this strange request was in line with the will of God. The crux of the matter is revealed when this man, who refuses to comply with a right hook, will meet sudden death in meeting a lion as a consequence of his disobedience, as you read further along n this chapter.
Though I would guess God will not ask you to sock anyone, I think one can never be sure what God will include in His will for us as we sojourn in this world.
When we receive a curious direction from God, we must remember that He wants the best for us, that He is already working in our future, and sinning against God always has consequences. God always knows and desires the best for us, so we should be willing to place trust in Him despite any perceived oddness of a situation at hand.
